How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with stress and overwhelm.
Learn how stress and overwhelm impact your thoughts and wellbeing, and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer, more confident and in control.
Does everything feel like it's building up?
Perhaps it's the endless to-do list, the invisible mental load, demands at home or at work, or the constant sense of responsibility. Sometimes it can feel as though you've reached your capacity, and there just isn't much room left to cope with anything else.
Stress and overwhelm can build gradually, sometimes without us really noticing how much we are carrying, or sometimes it feels like it's just one thing after another, and you can't seem to catch a break. You might find yourself feeling emotionally drained, mentally exhausted, more easily irritated, or struggling with things that would normally feel manageable.
The stress bucket.
Imagine that you carry a bucket around with you, and this bucket represents your capacity to cope with stress. Each day, different pressures and challenges can add a little more water to your bucket. It might be work, family responsibilities, finances, lack of sleep, worries about the future, or even the small frustrations that can build up throughout the day.
Some days, your bucket might feel fairly empty, and you have plenty of space and capacity to cope with whatever comes your way. Other days, it might feel like you are waking up with an already full bucket.
What happens when the bucket starts to fill? When water is being added to your bucket faster than it is being released, the level gradually rises. At first, you might notice some small changes. Perhaps you're feeling more irritable, waking during the night, finding it harder to concentrate, losing patience more quickly, or feeling as though you are constantly on edge. You might also notice that you're reaching for things that help you get through the day in the moment, but don't necessarily leave you feeling better afterwards.
And as your bucket continues to fill, there can come a point where it simply feels like there's no room left. This is often when stress can start to feel overwhelming. You might feel anxious, emotional or completely exhausted. Things that would normally feel quite manageable can suddenly seem like too much, and you may find yourself thinking, “I just can't cope.” And if you've been feeling this way for a while, you might also wonder why you can't simply switch off and relax.
Why can it feel so difficult to switch off?
When we're experiencing high levels of stress, our brain and body can become more alert and focused on dealing with everything that feels demanding or important. You may notice that your thoughts become busier, you are more easily distracted or irritated, or you find it harder to step back and think things through calmly or rationally.
It's not that you're failing to cope. Your brain is simply responding to everything you're carrying. You can find out more about how the brain responds to anxiety and stress on my anxiety page. And when this continues for a while, it can feel as though you're stuck in a cycle where you are constantly trying to catch up, but never quite getting the opportunity to pause and reset.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can give you some time and space to step back from everything you are carrying and begin to look at things differently. During sessions, we explore what you would like to change and how you would like things to feel instead. We look at what's already working for you, the things that are important to you, and the small, practical changes that could help you move towards feeling calmer and more in control. We can also start to look at what's going into your stress bucket and whether there are ways to release some of that pressure.
Sessions combine practical, solution-focused talking therapy with gentle, relaxing trance. This gives you an opportunity to step away from the stress bucket for a while and experience a calmer, more settled state. Over time, you can begin to notice that you are able to pause, think things through and respond in a way that feels calmer and more like you.
