How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with anxiety.

Understanding anxiety.
Do you often find yourself feeling anxious, spiralling in your thoughts, or ruminating about things that have already happened or things that haven’t even happened yet?
Anxiety is something many people experience, so you’re not alone in how you feel, even though it can be incredibly overwhelming at times. In fact, anxiety is a normal response. It’s your brain’s way of trying to keep you safe.
How your brain responds to anxiety.
During Solution Focused Hypnotherapy sessions, you learn more about how your brain works and why you might respond to situations in certain ways.
When we feel calm, we are often better able to think clearly, weigh things up logically and consider different perspectives. Even when something challenging happens, we are able to assess the situation and respond in a way that feels helpful and appropriate.
However, when we feel threatened or under pressure, another part of the brain becomes particularly active: the limbic system. This is involved in processing emotions, detecting potential threats and helping us respond to situations that might put us at risk.
Within this system is the amygdala, which you might imagine as your very own safety officer. When it detects a potential threat, it helps trigger the fight, flight or freeze response, preparing your body to protect you.
This response can be incredibly useful when we face genuine danger. But sometimes, our safety officer can become a little overprotective, keeping us on high alert even when there is no immediate danger.
Why anxiety can feel overwhelming.
Our brain’s threat response works well when we need to react quickly to something like a speeding car, a barking dog or a sudden loud noise. Our bodies can respond before we have had time to consciously think things through.
But anxiety can also arise in response to things we remember, imagine or anticipate. We might replay a conversation, worry about something that could happen tomorrow, or imagine the worst-case scenario. Although the threat might not be happening right now, our mind and body can still react as though we need to prepare for it.
Your brain is constantly trying to respond to what it believes you need, with the aim of keeping you safe. Sometimes, however, this can leave you caught in a cycle of worry, where one anxious thought leads to another.
When we spend a lot of time feeling anxious, stressed or on high alert, it can become harder to think clearly, see situations from a different perspective or respond in the way we would like. We might feel more reactive, emotionally drained or overwhelmed, as though anxiety is taking over.
It’s important to remember that this doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. These responses are part of how the brain tries to protect us, and with the right support and tools, it’s possible to develop more helpful ways of responding.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with anxiety.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you understand these patterns and begin to develop new ways of thinking and responding.
Through solution-focused talking therapy, we explore what you would like life to look and feel like, recognise what is already working well for you, and identify the strengths and resources you can draw upon. We focus on the positives in your life and the small, practical steps that can help you move towards the changes you want to make.
Relaxing trance is also incorporated into sessions, giving you time to pause, unwind and practise letting go of some of the mental pressure you may be carrying.
Over time, this approach can help you develop a more balanced perspective, build confidence in your ability to manage challenges, and respond to anxious thoughts with greater calm and self-compassion.
The aim isn’t to never feel anxious again. Anxiety is a normal human response. Instead, it’s about helping you feel better equipped to manage those feelings, so they have less influence over your day-to-day life.
